SOLID STONE

When it opened in 1918, Hotel Cleveland’s lobby instantly became an iconic image. Its fine furnishings, vaulted ceilings, arched windows and dramatic marble columns created an atmosphere of pure luxury for visitors who wanted to write home about it on hotel postcards.

While restoring the lobby’s grand historic features, no stone was left unturned. Literally. Our meticulous designers painstakingly tracked down the original quarry that produced the gorgeous gray stone used back in 1918 to clad its columns.

They discovered that it wasn’t shipped across the globe from Italy, but in fact came from Missouri-based Phenix Marble Company. Despite the fact that Phenix stopped producing its top-quality marble during the Depression, it had recently reopened and was again quarrying its elegant Napoleon Gray stone. With its distinctive fossilizations and striations, the stone is so revered that it’s found on the walls of the trading room of the New York Stock Exchange.

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, our team was thrilled to learn that Phenix Marble is again producing some of the world’s finest polished gray stone, which you’ll find in our lobby floor and guestrooms for a match made in heaven.
